  • Dave, you rock. Did my flattery work? Sysop and bureaucrat me, man! -67.170.178.252 07:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay, everybody just calm down and quit mocking me. I'm all logged in now. -Pete Forsyth 07:55, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Pete. You're now a co-Bureaucrat and co-Sysop.

  • Hi Dave, thanks for setting this up! Sysop/bureaucrat please. :-)
  • Also I think it would be great to enable pretty urls without the index.php part.
  • Also, please stick with pdx.wiki.org/ArticleName rather than pdx.wiki.org/wiki/ArticleName despite what the article says (happy to discuss further if you disagree). Brandon CS Sanders 17:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Brandon. You're also now a co-Bureaucrat and co-Sysop.
Although I've installed several MediaWiki instances over the past half-decade or so, I'm brand new as an active Sysop. Therefore if you can provide links to tutorials showing how to fulfill your other suggestions, that might save me a bit of time.

Thanks, Pete!

Pretty URLS

Start here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wiki_in_site_root_directory

If you need help after trying what is in that page, I can be of assistance. - Brandon CS Sanders 18:58, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Another request

Dave -- how do I go about getting PHPmyAdmin and FTP access? I'd like to get an image up, play with the nav. links, etc. -Pete Forsyth 9 August 2008

Also -- can you enable email on your account, or send me an email? I don't know any way to get in touch with you besides this page. -Pete Forsyth

A Couple of Quick Answers

RE: "PHPmyAdmin and FTP access" -- Is it okay if I give you that info over the phone? (503) 294-1234
RE: "enable email" -- Done. Sorry, about the lapse; thought I'd plugged in my email during install...
Phone is fine, I'll try to get squared away with you tomorrow. Thanks! -Pete Forsyth 08:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Brandon

RE: "Pretty URLS" -- I very much want to get this done ASAP, if for no other reason in order to avoid the ugly URLS spending more time getting spidered, propagated, etc... Going through the manuals it looks like I should have installed our wiki in a subdirectory. (I know you like it in root, but there's such a vehement advisory against doing so...)
Proposal -- I could move everything into a sub called pdx or something, then write the .htaccess file. Comments? Suggestions? (From all, of course.)
Dave ... please do not put it into a sub-directory. There is no reason for us to do so and it really mucks up our urls. The manual pages are full of FUD around the topic. I've set this up for 6 different mediawikis that get a fair amount of use and can help you do it well. Please give me a call at 503.729.9269 and we can chat more about this. I'm 99% confident that putting the wiki in the root is right for us. - Brandon CS Sanders 07:25, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi Brandon - I went ahead and modified the LocalSettings file and added the required .htaccess to beautify our URLs. If anyone else squawks, perhaps we can convince them of their folly. Failing that, I suppose we'll just bend to the will of the consensus. WikiMaster 01:29, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Squawk squawk! Them URLs is too beautiful, they hurts my eyes! Squawk! Pete Forsyth

By the way...

Sorry about replying here instead of your individual user pages. (Long day, and I need to fix supper.) If there's a clever way to do both at once (which I'm sure there is), I'll try and get that figured out soon...

Replying here is fine by me, and is pretty normal in the MediaWiki universe...some people like to keep discussions together, others like to reply on the other person's talk page. Still others think it depends on the situation, and still others just don't care too much. I'm somewhere between the last two :) Bottom line, MediaWiki just isn't a sensible platform for discussions, so to some degree we all just have to live with its foibles, and remember to check back on any discussions that are important to us. -Pete Forsyth 08:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

PDF ?

Dave, awesome work as wikimaster! I like the URLs. Do you plan to enable file uploads? I have several PDF articles that I'd like to upload if possible. --Shelley Schoepflin Sanders 17:49, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Shelley! My profuse apologies for failing to stumble across your message (above) until now. I could've sworn that I not only enabled file uploads (including PDFs) but that I adjust our wiki settings so that I'm emailed every time someone leaves a message on my user talk page.
I will look at our file upload settings today, and check into why I'm not automatically emailed whenever someone comments on my user talk page, and then get back with you. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to email (you have my email already - I just don't want to delight spammers by putting it up here) or call me at (503) 294-1234 with any other requests you may have.
